WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO IN THE DESIGN PROCESS?

Meet with the client and get to know them. In this initial meeting it is crucial to learn what the client's objective is as well as personal factors that determine the best way to approach the project. By learning the family structure and their lifestyle we can then make a plan that will work. It is amazing how the process unfolds after this initial meeting.

WHAT MISTAKES DO PEOPLE OFTEN MAKE WHEN DECIDING TO TAKE ON THEIR OWN HOME?

Most people have a challenge with scale and proportion. They will buy something they like but it may not work correctly in the space. This can lead to more purchases to try to make things harmonize. I would say this is the number one error I see when going to a home for analysis.

Another issue is not having a clear vision or game plan. Rooms or areas are started and left in mid process, so there is not a sense of completion.

We also cannot leave out the confusion of asking too many opinions. The more people offering their point of view, the more unsure the homeowner becomes of making decisions. There are so many options offered in home décor these days that it takes a professional to sift through and find the best choices.

WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM?

Inspiration can appear at random moments, but I find most inspiration in natural elements- the ocean, the mountains, trees, rock formations, flowers, and animals. I also am inspired by a work of art, a favorite song, or even a beautiful fabric or piece of furniture. I am also intriqued bystudying history and learning about people that have accomplished so much in just one lifetime. When at home, I love watching my cats play, especially 3-legged Bamboo who always motivates me.

WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE HAS INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST?

Frank Lloyd Wright. His work was so innovative, and he incorporated organic materials into his designs. He always unified the structure with its exterior surroundings. His motto to always leave a space more beautiful than you found it is something I strive to do everyday.

WHAT CAN A CLIENT DO TO MAKE THE DESIGN PROCESS MORE COHESIVE AND ENJOYABLE?

Lighten up, have fun, trust me, talk to me! I appreciate open and honest communication. I feel that we are all intuitive, but not mind readers. Accept that each detail is important.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE 2 DECISION MAKERS AND THEY HAVE CONTRASTING TASTES?

First I evaluate the two styles and see if there is any way they can feasibly work together. Also, is it truly a taste or is there something sentimental about the look they are attached to? This so often happens with pieces that have family history. It is important to consider all factors without sacrificing the integrity of design and how these components relate to the architecture of the home. Can we allocate one area to be a personal area for showcasing these items? We can always come up with a compromise as long as everyone is willing to look at options. I try not to take sides, but state what will be best in the home from an objective point of view.

DO YOU FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE SAME STYLE AS YOUR CLIENT?

Not at all, if everything was that easy we would never be challenged! Some of the most successful projects make us step out of our comfort zone and require research and new approaches. The goal is always to have the client's home reflect their personality and style, so making selections based on this is key. It is truly exciting to be gathering ideas and selections and finding components that are "so them"! That's what is called "flow"!

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHANGES YOU'VE SEEN IN THE DESIGN INDUSTY SINCE YOU STARTED YOUR CAREER?

Choices - so many!!! The internet and TV Design shows bombard us with information. Branding of personality's names gives recognition and market appeal. A designer no longer can just have good taste; they must be educated on trends, technological advances, good business structure, and green design concepts. Sifting through it all is truly a skill.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT YOUR CAREER?

The relationships I've made with my clients and being a factor in enhancing their environment. There is such excitement in starting a project and seeing it through while being able to incorporate so many wonderful elements that the design world has to offer.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE LEAST?

Paperwork and delays beyond my control.
